Bridges of Resistance: Solidarity From Cicero to Palestine

Exploring shared struggles and collective hope from the Cicero community to Palestine

Leer en Español

We are a hyperlocal bilingual newsroom that serves the residents of Cicero and Berwyn, IL. These two majority immigrant communities have been deeply affected by extensive histories of colonization, forced migration and resistance that extend far beyond this country's borders.

Since October 7, 2023, our newsroom has struggled to find ways to adequately cover Israel's ongoing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Our readers have shown us that as a newsroom dedicated to uplifting strategically marginalized people, we must recognize that the well-being of the very communities we hope to serve have their fates tied to a world that stands in solidarity with Palestinians.

We offer this series of opinion pieces and list of resources as a commitment to a world that believes in media integrity, and serves the interest of providing everyday people with fact and truth regardless of the politicians and systemic interest it might offend, and in service of a future that puts value in the lives of our neighbors over profit and the violent systems that pursue it.

By sharing these stories from our own local community, we aim to amplify their voices and continue to challenge oppression wherever it exists. Cicero Independiente remains committed to providing a platform for resistance and standing with those who fight for freedom and justice, including the people of Palestine. We stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

University students, including Cicero residents, join protests in solidarity with Palestine at Northwestern University, advocating for divestment from companies linked to Israeli investments. Read more about these students and their identity of being from Cicero as they camp out at University Meadow, calling for change.

State Rep. Abdelnasser Rashid discusses how billions in U.S. taxpayer dollars fund the Israeli military, while domestic needs like poverty relief, healthcare, and education go unmet. Learn about the role of protest in American history and its impact on civil rights and social justice.

From the struggles faced by the Latinx community in Cicero to the deep-rooted oppression experienced by Palestinians, José Quinones connects the shared resilience against systemic injustice. The fear of detention, forced to flee their homes, the fight for safety, and the search for something better echo across borders. Read more on the parallel stories of resistance and survival.
