Town Continues Spending On Settlements And Paving Improvements

The Town of Cicero Board of Trustees briefly met on September 27, 2022 to approve several ordinances and resolutions. 

The short list of agenda items approved included a zoning sign variance for Cermak Produce, a $60,000 settlement of litigation, new contracts awarded for paving improvements and the promotion of a new engineer for the Cicero Fire Department.

Here’s a summary of the approved agenda items:

The board began by approving an ordinance that grants a sign variance for the Cermak Produce located at 4605 West Cermak Road. This will allow Cermak Produce to install a new lighted sign that is 531 square feet.

Then a resolution authorized the settlement of litigation in the case Sergio Rodriguez V. Juan Valdez & Town Of Cicero which involved a vehicle collision that occurred on December 9, 2020. The settlement agreement stated that Rodriguez will receive $60,000.

Novotny Engineering submitted a recommendation to award a total of $193,565 in contracts to M&J Asphalt Paving Company, Inc. for parking lot pavement improvements at the following locations:

  1. Police Training Facility - 2944 S Laramie Ave

  2. Fleet Maintenance - 4921 W 25th St

With a recommendation from the Board Of Police And Fire Commissioners, the board approved the promotion of Patrick Brophy to the rank of engineer for the Cicero Fire Department.

The board then gave the floor to a lobbying group known as The Roosevelt Group. The group gave a quick presentation about the work they have done in Cicero and then brought on Illinois State Representative Elizabeth Hernandez to speak. 

Hernandez spoke about her work in securing funds for the town’s various redevelopment projects and especially the upcoming construction of Inclusion Park on Laramie Ave. 

Other achievements she mentioned included a family relief package, money invested into organizations such as the Boys Club and Corazon and additional funding for local police departments.

Citizen Comments

Martinez, a resident of Cicero approached the podium to thank the board for it’s extensive selection of senior activities.

“Being a senior, I love this place,” said Martinez.

“You’ll enjoy a lot of the events we have. My wife runs that department,” replied Dominick.
